WASHINGTON, DC, MARCH 13, 2024—The Festival Center proudly announces its recognition as a recipient of the 2024 District Sustainability Award, presented by the Department of Energy and Environment (DOEE). This esteemed accolade acknowledges the Center’s commitment to advancing sustainability in the District of Columbia.

The District Sustainability Awards celebrate outstanding businesses, individuals, and organizations dedicated to fostering a more sustainable future for Washington, D.C. Awardees exemplify initiatives that align with the Mayor’s Sustainable DC Plan, an ambitious framework aimed at propelling the District towards becoming the nation’s premier model of environmental stewardship and resilience. This comprehensive plan encompasses critical pillars including equity, governance, education, built environment, climate, economy, energy, food, nature, transportation, waste, and water.

The Festival Center earned this prestigious award in recognition of its recent renovation efforts and proactive approach to enhancing energy efficiency. In collaboration with New Columbia Solar and Usource Services, the Center spearheaded the installation of a cutting-edge solar energy system. Comprising 88 rooftop panels and 19 additional panels in an innovative awning-style configuration, this system maximizes energy production while showcasing forward-thinking design principles. This project wouldn’t have been possible without the support of Mainstreet Bank, and a loan through the PACE Program administered by DC Green Bank

Notably, the Festival Center’s initiatives position it as a leader in sustainability, exceeding current D.C. regulations mandating full electrification of new buildings within three years. Moreover, the Center’s 19,000-square-foot facility surpasses energy efficiency standards for buildings of its size by an impressive margin, setting a benchmark for environmentally conscious construction and operation.

“We are honored to receive the 2024 District Sustainability Award from the Department of Energy and Environment,” remarked Bill Mefford, Executive Director at the Festival Center. “This recognition underscores our unwavering commitment to environmental justice and furthers the importance of collaborative partnerships between governmental agencies and nonprofits. Nonprofits play a vital role in driving meaningful change. We look forward to working with other businesses, nonprofits, and houses of worship in reimagining their space and implementing crucial energy savings efforts.”
